Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ayurveda?
*(Pronounced— I-Yer-Vay-Duh)
Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The term "Ayurveda" comes from the Sanskrit words "Ayur," meaning life, and "Veda," meaning knowledge or science. Thus, Ayurveda translates to "the science of life."
Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. It emphasizes the importance of harmony with nature and the environment. The practice includes various approaches, such as herbal medicine, dietary recommendations, yoga, meditation, and lifestyle changes.
One of the key concepts in Ayurveda is the idea of "doshas," which are the three fundamental energies believed to govern physiological and psychological processes in the body: Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Each person has a unique combination of these doshas, and maintaining balance among them is essential for good health.
Ayurveda also promotes preventive care and holistic treatment, focusing on treating the root causes of ailments rather than just the symptoms. It encourages individuals to take an active role in their health by making informed lifestyle choices.
How long have you been doing this and what got you started?
I have been practicing Ayurvedic bodywork since 2015, first starting my journey at the Ayurveda Wellness Institute, which was once located in Robinson, PA, before its closure. In 2017, I opened my own practice to continue sharing the healing power of Ayurveda. My introduction to Ayurveda came after the tragic loss of my father, a turning point that led me to explore this ancient system of healing.
Through consistent Ayurvedic practices, I was able to heal not only my grief but also a number of physical ailments, including chronic back pain, depression, sinus infections, and ear infections. My whole health and well-being transformed when I began practicing Ayurveda, and I have witnessed the same transformation in my clients who embrace it with consistency, especially those who incorporate monthly bodywork sessions into their routines.
I deeply believe in the healing power of Ayurvedic practices, having experienced firsthand the profound effects of herbal oils and seen significant health issues resolved through Panchakarma therapies. My greatest wish is for more people to try Ayurveda and experience its life-changing benefits—it truly works when practiced with commitment and consistency.
What is an Abhyanga?
(Pronounced: Abby-Ong-Ga)
Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic full-body bodywork therapy that uses warm, herbal oils tailored to your unique needs and dosha (body constitution). This deeply nourishing and rejuvenating practice is designed to restore balance, improve circulation, and calm the nervous system.
The warm oil penetrates the skin, promoting detoxification, reducing muscle tension, and supporting overall relaxation. Abhyanga is not just a massage—it’s a therapeutic ritual that enhances physical, mental, and emotional well-being, leaving you feeling grounded, revitalized, and more connected to your body.
What’s the difference between a Massage and an Abhyanga?
While both massage and Abhyanga offer relaxation and physical benefits, there are key differences in their approach, purpose, and techniques:
Massage
Focus: Primarily targets muscles, fascia, and soft tissues to relieve tension, improve circulation, and reduce pain.
Techniques: Uses varying pressures, kneading, and deep tissue work. Common styles include Swedish, deep tissue, or sports massage.
Oils: Neutral oils or lotions are often used and not necessarily selected for their therapeutic properties.
Goal: Relaxation, muscle relief, and physical recovery.
Abhyanga
Focus: A holistic Ayurvedic therapy that aims to balance the mind, body, and spirit while improving circulation, calming the nervous system, and eliminating toxins.
Techniques: Gentle, rhythmic strokes are performed with warm herbal oils chosen based on your dosha (body type), seasonal or specific needs.
Oils: The oils are therapeutic, infused with herbs to nourish tissues, support detoxification, and balance energy.
Goal: To restore overall balance, rejuvenate the body, promote detoxification, and calm the mind for deeper healing.
Do I need to bring anything or prepare for an Abhyanga Treatment?
To get the most out of your Abhyanga treatment, it’s important to prepare your body and mind for the experience. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that you don’t mind getting a little oil on after your session. Avoid eating a heavy meal right before your treatment to ensure your body is in a relaxed state for optimal benefits. It’s also best to schedule your Abhyanga when you are not experiencing a heavy menstrual cycle, as the treatment is deeply rejuvenating and detoxifying, which can be too stimulating during that time. Arrive with an open mind, ready to release tension and allow the therapeutic oils to nourish, ground, and restore your body and spirit
Do I need to shower after my treatment?
After your Abhyanga session, it’s best to leave the nourishing oils on your body for as long as possible to allow their healing properties to deeply penetrate the tissues. If you need to shower, try to wait at least 4 hours to maximize the benefits. When washing your hair, apply shampoo directly to your dry scalp before adding water—this helps break down the oil more effectively. Then, rinse thoroughly and apply shampoo again with water for a second cleanse to ensure the oil is fully removed. Avoid harsh soaps on the body; instead, let the warm water rinse away excess oil while still keeping your skin soft and hydrated. This gentle approach preserves the rejuvenating effects of your Abhyanga session.
How often should I get an Ayurvedic Body-work Treatment?
For optimal health and well-being, Abhyanga treatments are recommended on a monthly basis. Regular sessions help to maintain balance in the body and mind by improving circulation, reducing stress, and supporting the body’s natural detoxification process. Consistent Abhyanga treatments nourish the skin, calm the nervous system, and release stored tension, promoting deep relaxation and vitality. By incorporating this ancient Ayurvedic practice into your monthly self-care routine, you’ll experience long-term benefits such as improved energy, enhanced immunity, and a greater sense of inner harmony and well-being.
